Good dog care keeps the dog happy and healthy. There is a lot to consider. We are happy to tell you why dog grooming is so important and which areas require attention. Of course it involves things like a comfortable dog bed, a good dog house and dog toys with which the dog can enjoy himself. But can you leave a dog at home alone? What about his coat care, dental care and food?
The dog must have enough space to walk, play and relieve himself. Housing must be safe and protect the dog from cold and heat. A dry and comfortable place to sleep is mandatory. This can be a basket in the house or a dog house outside with insulation, straw or blankets. A kennel or a crate (wire cage) is unsuitable for permanent housing.
A dog is a social animal. If you have one dog, have familiar and friendly dogs as regular play and walking partners. Leaving a dog alone for a long time can cause stress and boredom.
A dog should be fed food at least twice a day that says ‘complete dog food‘. Be careful with table scraps or extras, as they can make the dog sick or too fat. Fat dogs are more likely to suffer from serious health problems. The ribs should be easily felt and barely visible under the skin. Leave the dog alone during and right after eating.
Dogs need varied activities for relaxation. They must be able to sniff, walk, dig, swim and explore. Walk the dog daily on a comfortable harness and long leash. Let the dog run free where possible and allowed, for example on a dog meadow.
Dental care of the dog
Good dental care for the dog is crucial. A dog needs strong and healthy teeth to eat properly. Have your dog’s teeth checked regularly at the vet. Plaque in the dog, tartar in the dog and inflammation cause bad breath, sore gums, loose teeth and sometimes even infections elsewhere in the body.
With dental care of the dog you can brush the teeth with special dog toothbrushes and dog toothpaste. The teeth can also be kept clean by letting the dog chew on chews and chew toys a lot.
A dog at home alone is not a good idea
Dogs are social animals that require a lot of attention from their owner and family members. Lack of company can cause the animals to feel lonely and bored. This can cause problems, such as barking, whining, breaking household goods and being unclean. A dog can also develop separation anxiety. To prevent this, in case of daily absence you can opt for day care in a pet boarding house or accommodation with private individuals.
If you are only occasionally away, you can train the dog to be alone. Build this up slowly, by first practicing at home and not taking too big steps. There must be something positive about your absence. For example, you can give the dog a food ball when you leave the room. As soon as you come back in, take the food ball away again. In this way you create a positive association with being alone when taking care of your dog.
Step by step you extend the time that you leave the animal alone by a few minutes. If that goes well, you can open and close the front door. After all, you can train with actually just getting out the door. If the dog starts to show problem behavior again in your absence, do not immediately approach him. This will reward the dog for its behavior and validate the dog’s separation anxiety. Rather wait for him to stop and then go inside.
